Summary
Peripheral
artery disease (PAD) is a medical condition in which arteries become
narrow due to build-up of plague on the vessel walls. Peripheral
artery disease affects the arteries of arms, legs or
neuro-vasculature, other than those that supply the heart and brain.
Peripheral
artery disease is also known as Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) and
Peripheral Artery Occlusive Disease. Plaque that deposits in the
arteries is made up of fats, cholesterol, calcium, fibrous tissue and
other substances in the blood. Plaque formations can grow large
enough to significantly reduce the blood's flow through an artery.
Treatment
of Peripheral artery disease requires multiple approaches, depending
on the individual patient. There are two main approaches for the
treatment of PAD. The first approach is endovascular treatment, which
includes stenting, ballooning and atherectomy. These different
treatments can also be used in combination, such as atherectomy with
stenting. The second approach is surgical treatment, which includes
bypass surgery and amputation.
